Doctors urged to give out vouchers for foodbanks

Published: 11th December 2012

The Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF) is encouraging more doctors to give out vouchers for foodbanks.

In the latest edition of Triple Helix, its magazine for Christian doctors, a report by CMF member Dr Valerie Rowe asked why it seems so few doctors currently participate in the scheme by giving out the vouchers.

To receive emergency food, clients must be referred by front-line care professionals such as doctors, social workers, other healthcare professionals, head teachers, faith-workers and debt advice agencies.

According to the Trussell Trust a record number of people have received emergency food from UK foodbanks over the last six months.

Dr Peter Saunders, CEO of Christian Medical Fellowship says: 'Doctors can play a key part in distributing foodbank vouchers to hungry people. The rising cost of food and fuel combined with static incomes, high unemployment and changes to benefits, is forcing people into crisis where they cannot afford to eat. If doctors know of foodbanks in their area we would encourage them to ask to be sent vouchers to give away to needy patients.'

Notes:

Triple Helix is CMF's flagship publication for today's Christian doctor, published three times a year.
