The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has drafted guidelines for end of life care for infants, children and young people with life-limiting conditions. The guidelines cover care planning and support for children and young people approaching the end of their lives, as well as support for parents, carers and healthcare professionals.
CMF has submitted a response welcoming the guidelines, their general tone and content, and the absence of any reference to 'pathways' of care that in other settings have defaulted to inflexible protocols. We have urged that the guidelines be extended to include unborn children with life-limiting conditions, and have emphasised the valuable contribution made by perinatal hospices and palliative care in these situations.
