Under the terms of the Northern Ireland (Executive Formation) Act 2019, recently passed by the Parliament, and in the continuing absence of a sitting Assembly in Belfast, the UK Government has drawn up proposals for the provision of abortion services in NI that will become law in March 2020. In doing so, the Government is imposing its will on NI despite health matters being a devolved responsibility and that all the NI sitting MP's in Westminster voted against the new legislation. The government is now consulting on its proposals. The proposals, if implemented, would mean that NI would have one of the most liberal abortion policies in Europe. They are based on recommendations from the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
CMF has submitted a response to the consultation, which can be read in full here
