Home use of both pills for early medical abortion up to 10 weeks gestation

The UK government is consulting on possibly the most significant change to the law on abortion since 1967. In short, the proposal would make permanent the emergency provisions made a year ago, to permit women in the first 10 weeks pregnancy to take both pills to induce a medical abortion at home. The pills are sent through the post. There is no requirement for a face-to-face consultation but an initial consultation with a 'clinician' is held over the phone. The government is promoting the change on the basis that more women will have earlier consultations and therefore earlier abortions that, it argues, will be safer. CMF opposes the change in the law, again on the basis of safety. The full submission can be found here.
