What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to be faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, `go, I wish you well: keep warm and well fed', but does nothing
We communicate our faith by speech and action. While working in a hospital does give opportunities to testify in words, most of the time we show our Christianity by what we do and how we do it. I once asked an experienced ward sister what she thought were the qualities of a good nurse. She gave me her opinion and then added the names of three nurses to illustrate what she meant; they were all Christians!
A well-to-do Hindu, who had become a Christian, told how this had come about. It was in a mission hospital in North India where he had been a patient. He had not been influenced by a sermon or a tract, but simply because `I saw Christ walking through the wards', he said. Jesus said `Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven' (Mt 5:16 NIV).
It has been a great encouragement to me over the years to see this light shining in the lives of Christian housemen, nurses, physios and ward maids in my own unit. Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead' (Jas 2:17 NIV).
May the mind of Christ my Saviour
Live in me from day to day,
By his love and power controlling
All I do and say.
May the peace of God my Father
Rule my life in everything,
That I may be calm to comfort
Sick and sorrowing.
