29th July: Changes in Sexual Points of View

'... for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26, 26

'When we were young, if a boy caused a girl to be pregnant, it was a disaster for him. There was just no way out of the situation'. So remarked a colleague who studied medicine at the same time as myself, 25 years ago. He blames the contraceptive pill for a vast social change. As he went on to explain; nowadays, if a girl becomes pregnant, it is regarded by most people as being her own fault, because she was not taking 'the pill'. So the male partner very often feels no responsibility towards her.

My doctor friend also remarked that he had observed that many young women were very aggressive in their pursuit of boy friends today. This is in sharp contrast to the situation which prevailed when we were young. In those days the girl would wait to be asked out by the young man. My friend blames the pill for this change also. He pointed out that, while taking the pill, girls felt safe from the main consequence of casual sex (omitting VD) and so were out to gratify their desires and sense of conquest.

The above is not the only reason for change in this area. Thanks to the feminist movement, many young people are confused about sexual roles, and many women wish to act like men. However, the Bible does not teach that women are inferior to men - rather that they are equal, yet different. Different they are, too - physically, functionally, physiologically and even spiritually at times, and yet 'before the cross the ground is level'.

Another reason for change in sexual patterns of young people is the propaganda and pressure of the 'permissive society'. The prevailing climate of opinion on a subject has a tremendous impact for good or ill on individuals. Only a spiritual revival can help to change it in our day and in our nation. Let is begin with you and me.

Grant to us, Lord, a right view of the value of people
and a right perspective on human relationships.
And help us to share this with others, especially our patients,
with sympathy and understanding.
