I Corinthians 1: 27 - 29
Just Little Me
It took me a long time to get round to writing anything for this book. It was partly because I was busy and partly because I didn’t know what to write. I’m not an amazing Christian with wise things to say and I felt a bit inadequate.
I was praying about what on earth I could say when I realised that I had been right: I am not an amazing Christian and I am inadequate. I am so grateful that God asks me to do anything for Him when He knows even better than I do that I’m not the best person to ask. He hasn’t asked me to serve Him because He needed me and knew I’d be good at it, but just because He wanted to ask me.
I had a fantastic medical elective in Brazil. Everything worked out so well, not because of anything I had planned but because God blessed me lots and fitted everything together so perfectly. I had been worried before I went that maybe I wouldn’t be able to do anything much, especially as my Portuguese isn’t very good. While I was there I was invited to more hospitals and clinics than I could fit into the time I had. I managed to use enough Portuguese, and I had the privilege of caring for an abandoned baby for a month.
These verses in Corinthians reminded me that no Christian is especially good on their own but just because of what God does. God asks us to use what He has given us and that is always enough. Nobody can say that they don’t have enough or they aren’t good enough to do anything for God yet. If anything, that makes them even better qualified to be used by God. He likes to choose the foolish, the weak, the lowly and the despised.
