Micah 6: 8
Walking with God
It is easy to get caught up in work, in the doing of things for God, in pursuing our careers, or even just getting to the end of a shift with physical and mental health relatively intact. Sometimes everything seems to revolve around our work, our social life, our reading - it all crowds in.
There is a saying that ‘the good is the enemy of the best’ - and that goes double for serving God. What motivated you to go overseas for your elective? Was it to get an exciting experience, to try something different? Was it to see and learn something new of God, or was it a desire to serve Him? All these are good reasons - and I would be the last to decry them, but they can be the enemy of the best.
But what is the best, you ask? Micah sums it up. Yes, show the fruit of the Sprit in justice and kindness, these are essential parts of our daily walk (see Amos 5: 24, Jeremiah 7: 3 - 6), but they are not the walk. The walk is with God - it is in journeying with Him through each and every moment of each and every day that we find the best and not just the good.
Hosea 6: 6 and Zephaniah 2: 3 speak more of this - God wants our presence, our focus to be on Him, not on His gifts, not on His work, but on Him. All else then flows from that.
Each day is a journey, part of a longer ‘journey of our lives’, as Dante describes it in the Divine Comedy. We may have many different companions on that journey, coming and going at different times, some staying for longer than others, some walking more closely with us than others, but there is only One who walks with us all day, every day, for the whole of our lives. And it is His company above all other things that we should cultivate.
