Have you ever wondered what has been happening in the field of genetics recently, but not had the time or energy to do a literature search? Have you ever needed information on an ethical issue, or wondered about the Christian perspective? Are you trying to plan an elective, but having difficulty getting your dream off the ground? I’ll keep you in suspense no longer. The CMF website could be the answer to all your problems!
www.cmf.org.uk is the ‘must go’ destination of the millennium! (Not that I’m biased or anything). With over 800 files and more than 4MB of text, since its launch in June 1997, over 120,000 people have paid a visit. Surfing around the site is easy-peasy. You can navigate either by following links from the homepage, using the internal search engine (just tap in a word to bring up all the articles on that issue), or by accessing the left-hand index strip which takes you into the site’s major sections. You’ll find up-to-date news reports and a wealth of material on hot issues in medical ethics. Full electronic back issues of Nucleus, the students' quarterly publication and Triple Helix, the CMF doctors’ magazine. In addition there is the CMF publications list, and dedicated student pages with information on upcoming CMF events coming to a medical school city near you, and abundant links to medical pages the world over.
The Medical Missionary Association (MMA) site can be found at www.cmf.org.uk/international/ and is a first port of call if you have an elective to plan. There are also back issues of Saving Health magazine to 1995, and much more on medical mission on the Healthserve site.
CMF is not alone in the world. The International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) is the umbrella organisation through which CMF is linked with around 60 similar interdenominational bodies world-wide. Check out their website at www.icmda.net. You’ll find links to Christian medical websites all over the globe, but if I had to select just one ‘best of the rest’ I’d recommend visiting the Christian Medical and Dental Associations of the USA (CMDA) at www.cmda.org. Lots of literature to keep you surfing happily for hours on end! Finally, the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) of which CMF is an affiliated postgraduate group, have a flashy site at www.uccf.org.uk.
All that’s left for me to say is enjoy your electronic quest, and don’t spend too long in front of the computer screen. Rather, armed with these resources, get out into the world and use them!
