In association with eight other healthcare bodies, the Clinical Standards Group of the Royal College of Physicians released in mid-February Concise guidance to good practice: Advance Care Planning . Described as 'evidence-based guidelines for clinical management' this commendably brief document contains useful summaries and sensible advice which will affect many members in their day-to-day practice.
CMF welcomes this guidance but remains concerned that legally binding advance refusals of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration in patients whose deaths are not imminent may yet lead to 'euthanasia by the back door'.
