Euthanasia, Cloning, Morning after pill, cannabis...Every week it seems there is a new issue in medical ethics making front page news. CMF has been raising its media profile and since November 2001 has been working with Evangelical Alliance Media Consultancy to respond to major bioethics news stories as they break. So far, we have made six press releases through EA which have led to several radio and television interviews, quotes in the Times and The Daily Mail and also in several church newspapers including Church Times, Churchman, Tablet, Baptist Times, Christian Herald, Evangelicals Now and Church of England newspaper. We have also had letters to the editor in the Times and Telegraph and articles in Evangelicals Now, the Churchman and the Church of England newspaper.
In the coming year we are looking to run more media training days (both basic and advanced), develop a database of regional and national spokesmen on specific issues, and draft ‘position statements’ on a range of ethical issues for journalists, members writing or speaking on issues, and anyone else with an interest.
CMF members involved in decision-making bodies like the GMC, BMA, journal editorial committees and local NHS Trusts can have significant influence on policy and future direction. A lot are already involved and many more, especially at junior and student level are becoming so. They need our support in prayer, with literature and in encouragement to be a Christian voice.
CMF is also involved in a number of strategic partnerships with other Christian and prolife organisations and these alliances are useful for information sharing, strategic planning and some joint activity. Please pray for all these initiatives, that we may truly be ‘a voice for the voiceless’.
