CMF student membership currently stands at just over 1,000. New medical schools have recently opened in Norwich, Keele and Exeter/Plymouth (Peninsular Medical School), with further new schools due to open in Derby, Hull/York and Brighton this September. Please be praying for new student members, medical school secretaries and CMF student groups in these schools, as there is much work to be done in getting them established and making CMF known on campus.
See page 2 for news of staffworker and Relay worker movements. Contact students@cmf.org.uk if you would like to receive any staffworker/Relay worker prayer letters.
National Conference 2004
Dates for this have now been set for 13- 15 February 2004. The theme will be ‘Once for All’; the Bible addresses from Hebrews will be given by Nigel Lee (former head of student ministries at UCCF) and the conference address will be given by Marjory Foyle (former medical missionary and author of Honourably Wounded ). Publicity will be available soon and seminar leaders and houseparents are being finalised. Please pray for the ongoing planning of this, the highlight of the CMF student year.
London Missionary Breakfast
Peter Armon (CMF Overseas Secretary) spoke on ‘Get Out More! 21st Century Medical Mission’, at Guy’s Hospital on 6 May. He drew lessons from Haggai, where the people had suffered for neglecting God’s priorities, but attention to God’s agenda brought them great blessing. He then gave some remarkable illustrations of God’s faithfulness from his own involvement in medical mission in southern and North Africa; these were a great encouragement and challenge to all present. The message was summed up by saying that mission is about seeing what God is doing and then joining in!
CMF Summer School
About 20 students and CMF staff attended the inaugural summer school on 30 June-3 July to be trained and equipped to reach out to students around them. There is a great need for leaders who understand the times we are in and know how to bring the eternal truth of Scripture to bear on contemporary medical issues in a way that is both biblical and relevant.
BMA Medical Students’ Committee
For the last four years, CMF has been coopted onto the Medical Students’ Committee of the British Medical Association (BMA). This has been a great opportunity to have a Christian voice within the BMA, which is ever more important as the profession slides further away from historic Judaeo- Christian ethical values.
We have just heard that we have been voted on for the fifth consecutive year. This is great news for which we are extremely thankful to God. Please pray for the right student to represent us and for wisdom in using this opportunity in the best way.
CMF Summer Teams
Student/doctor summer teams go out each year, mainly to help run evangelistic camps. This year teams are planned in Kursk (Russia, 4-12 July), Simferopol (Ukraine, 4-8 August), Tver (Russia, 4-11 Aug), Bulgaria (first week of Aug), Yerevan (Armenia, date to be confirmed) and Tirana (Albania, August) and at further locations in Central Asia and the Balkans. Much prayer is needed for planning, finance and team members.
There will also be a conference for Russian-speaking students from all over the former USSR in Samara, Russia (15- 20 July) for which over 150 were booked at the time CMF News went to press.
