Moving with the Times

From the beginning the Medical Missionary Association has been committed to encouraging Christian doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to play their part in what God is doing around the world. Over the years, the methods may have changed but our aims are the same. Nick Mott
In the early days we were involved in fundraising for mission organisations and published ‘Conquest by Healing’, a magazine that gave information about medical mission overseas. Later, we purchased the first of several hostels, which enabled us to actively encourage Christian students to think about their own place in Christian ministry using their medical training in a mission context.

More recently our work has been to motivate and equip Christian health professionals into Christian mission through a number of initiatives including HealthServe magazine, the various training events and conferences that we run, including the ‘Residential Refresher Course’ and the provision of financial grants for undergraduate electives and postgraduate study.

www.healthserve.org
One area of activity that has been developing recently is our rapidly expanding website, healthserve.org. From what was a couple of pages on the CMF website in the late nineties, our site has grown to a large database-driven website containing over 600 pages of information and resources aimed at mobilising Christian healthcare students and professionals into overseas Christian work. As well as the latest news from the world of healthcare mission and information on how our organisation has developed over the years, there are pages and pages of useful and relevant content related to healthcare and medical mission.

Online Publications
For 125 years the various magazines we have produced have been a key part of our work. Over the last forty years, we have published three separate titles each with the underlying aim of mobilising healthcare mission’. ‘Saving Health’ was first published in 1962 and then from 1997 ‘Among All Nations’ was produced along side it as an insert in CMF’s ‘Triple Helix’ magazine. These ran up until 2000, when our current magazine, HealthServe’ replaced them both.

All published editions of ‘Among all Nations’, HealthServe’ and editions of ‘Saving Health’ going back to 1995 are available on our website. At the current time there are nearly 200 healthcare and medical mission related articles dealing with the wide range of topics and issues, fully searchable and available free of charge.

We hope to expand this archive in the near future to include earlier editions of ‘Saving Health’ and also include articles from ‘Conquest by Healing’, which although first published over a hundred years ago, still remain amazingly relevant.

Overseas Opportunities
Some things never change. Just as it was in Jesus’ day so it is still true today. The harvest is still plentiful but the workers are still few. Many mission organisations complain that there is a shortage of people available and willing to get involved in the work of the harvest. And if it is hard recruiting for mission in general, how much harder must it be recruiting for those needs that require a doctor, nurse, therapist or another healthcare professional.

Our ‘Overseas Opportunities’ section seeks to help address those needs and raise awareness of the many amazing open doors for Christian healthcare professionals to serve Christ in the developing world.

On our website you will find a searchable database of many current opportunities to serve short or long-term with some of the leading Christian mission organisations. At the moment we carry opportunities for hospital administrators and managers, clinical psychologists, counsellors, dentists, dieticians, doctors, health co-ordinators and educators, midwives, nurses and therapists to serve in over 30 countries around the world.

Resources for Healthcare and Medical Students
Traditionally the territory of medical students, the elective is now a tremendous opportunity for UK healthcare students of all disciplines to experience healthcare provision in the developing world.

An elective in a mission setting gives the Christian student the added opportunity to see what God is doing around the world through the lives of everyday Christians who have answered the call to overseas service.

Seeing that this short-term opportunity can develop into a long-term commitment to mission we have included on healthserve.org loads of resources to help the Christian healthcare student organise and prepare for their elective. There are useful articles, reports from students who have taken an elective in a mission context and information about funding and places to go for advice, including an online version of our publication, ‘Preparing for your Medical Elective Overseas’. You will also find a listing of organisations and overseas Christian hospitals that offer placements for elective students.

HealthServe Pages
The most recent development to our site is what we have dubbed a ‘Yellow Pages’ for healthcare mission. This resource directory was originally started by David Clegg (our former General Secretary), and latterly compiled and completed by our Medical Director, Peter Armon as a resource to help him advise those wanting to get involved in healthcare and medical mission.

It contains all the important web links and contact addresses that someone getting involved or already serving in a healthcare and medical mission context might need. Categories include:
  • Support organisations for Christian healthcare professionals
  • Information about courses and raising finance
  • International medical bodies and other relevant secular organisations
  • Equipment, drugs, freighting, personal resources, travel and UK accommodation
  • Christian sending & receiving organisations with a healthcare interest
Again, this information is completely free and can be found by clicking here.

We hope and pray that healthserve.org continues to develop as a resource useful for those wanting to serve Christ and that it will continue to motivate many more UK Christian healthcare students and professionals into taking their first steps towards a long-term commitment to healthcare and medical mission.
