e-newsletter : 23 July 2008

We trust Trevor Stammers' recent letter encouraged you and hope you will enjoy reading the latest CMF periodicals over the summer. This news update will be the last for a while.

Good news from BMA ARM
At the ARM this month an attempt to restrict conscience and thereby limit clinical independence and professional freedom was lost. Newly graduated member David Randall spoke effectively against Evan Harris MP, and can be seen near the beginning of a 35' video. Earlier, two CMF members had spoken against animal-human hybrids as unnecessary and unethical, and although they lost the debate the ethics would not have been heard otherwise.

HFE Bill postponed
Later that day, the government announced that 3rd Reading and Report stage would not after all be held on 14 July but deferred until the autumn. This gives both sides of the abortion debate more time to lobby. 2065 is an excellent parliamentary Early Day Motion about abortion counselling and informed consent, partly picking up on another ARM motion. Could you write to your MP over the summer about signing that EDM?

Developing Health Course
Peter Armon wrote: '68 booked in... 36 here for the whole two weeks... good mix... 59 doctors, 7 nurses and midwives, 1 therapist, 1 medical student... wide experience with several 'long termers' on home leave and several preparing to go... we even have two octogenarians... one who went for 6 months when she retired and stayed for 21 years and another about to go overseas short term... come from 10 different nations - from America to Japan, Africa, India and the Far East - and working in 27 different countries... feedback excellent... the uniqueness of the course and the blessing it is'.

New Head of International Ministries
Peter Armon finally retires on 31 July and Vicky Lavy starts on 1 September. Please pray for them and their families.

Could you help us find office staff?
We are currently advertising 3 vacancies. Is there anybody in your church or circle of contacts who might be interested?

Three Peaks Challenge
On 9 August CMF students and staff are tackling the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge to raise £10k for our national students' conference. Find out more or sponsor them by choosing the 'justgiving' links.

Students and juniors wanted in Austria
About 60 Brits have registered so far for this ICMDA Eurasia conference 7-14 September, but only 7 are students or juniors. Accommodation still available, some free on church floors, flights cheap. You may only just have found out your rotas, or sorted your summer plans, so do book!

For the retired
Last year's conference was over-subscribed. This year's is 7-9 October.

Saline Solution training in Cumbria
Find out about this Saturday course on 11 October.

Palliative care conference
Hospice23 exists to develop the Christian presence in palliative care and their residential conference 19-22 October is entitled 'Interface: Extending the Boundaries'

Changes at Guild of Catholic Doctors
Our friends have changed their constitution to accept health professionals other than doctors as members, so have changed their name to 'Catholic Medical Association – UK'

With the summer holidays either on us or approaching, we trust everybody will get some well-earned rest and recuperation:

'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face towards you and give you peace.' (Numbers 6: 24-26)
