A Brief History of the ASMCR

CMF is linked with 90 similar bodies worldwide through the International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA). Here Anamaria Chirila, secretary of the Christian Medical Students’ Association of Romania (ASMCR),reports on their history and activities. This is just one of many Christian medical student groups that are evolving in different countries and reminds us of the international partnership we share in Christ. Let’s pray that we may take every opportunity to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith (Rom 1:12).
1989-1990: After the revolution medical students met up in Bible study groups run by international organisations and made contact with Christian doctors and students in other countries. The Christian Medical Association in Romania (AMCR) was founded as an interdenominational Christian and professional organisation.

1994-1995: Medical students helped to distribute medical aid through the evangelical churches. Peter Saunders (CMF UK General Secretary) encouraged the Romanian Christian medical students to unite.

1996: 1996 was a very significant year. In January Ana Maria Sava and Dana Cretu were the first students from Romania to attend the CMF UK National Students’ Conference. In May the students’ section of the AMCR was formed. During the year over 60 medical students from universities around Romania attended camps and conferences, including the ICMDA congress in Hungary. In addition, a weekly fellowship group of medical students began to meet in Cluj-Napoca, to discuss bioethical, spiritual and student issues. Similar groups, also involved with charity work, were set up in other cities.

1997: In January the CMF UK conference was attended by Adina Mates and Simona Hirdo, the latter dying two weeks later in a tragic accident. In total over the year nearly 180 students met up at conferences, a camp, and New Year celebrations. An unforgettable conference entitled ‘The Christian Hospital’ was held at Poiana Honi.

1998: Once again, the CMF UK conference in January was attended by two Romanian students and in April 128 students attended the third annual ASMCR conference in Oradea. Adina Mates was a delegate at the 11th ICMDA World Congress in Durban, South Africa. Around a hundred students joined together for a preconference.

1999: In January Radu Croitor and Florin Buhas attended the CMF UK International Students’ Pre-conference in London and the National Students’ Conference at Swanwick. In April the national ASMCR conference was held in Iasi. Medical students Phil Allan and Andrew Greenfield attended from the UK.

2000: The national ASMCR conference was held in Bucharest with a record attendance of 180 medical students, including three delegates from CMF UK.
