GP employment rights
Christian GPs whose practices have a 'basis of faith' should be aware of the EU Employment Rights Directive which must be implemented by all member states by December 2003. The government's consultation process is still underway, but it is likely that practices with a genuine basis of faith may be exempted from the religious (but not the sexual orientation) rules. The directive implies that practices can insist on all staff subscribing to a basis of faith where that is necessary to preserve the organisation's ethos. It is not yet known if the new rules will apply to the admission of persons into a partnership, as opposed to the granting of a contract of employment. Practices which have a basis of faith are advised to ensure that, by 2004, they can demonstrate that the practice has a Christian ethos such that it requires all employees and partners to be Christians.
