Why Does God Allow Suffering? - Brad Burke - Victor 2006 - £6 Pb 160pp - ISBN 0781442834

Why does God allow suffering? It is a theme that we encounter daily in healthcare and one of the hardest questions we face when sharing our faith. This book is part of a series by an American physician, exploring some key attributes of God.

Starting with the basics, we are reminded to get our life priorities in order, recommitting ourselves to God and submitting to his ways.

The subsequent chapters tell the story of a family struck by multiple tragedies. Not only do their children die; the parents themselves suffer ill health and unemployment. But they keep God's presence and will central in their lives. After asking many searching questions, they come to accept that not all suffering can be rationalised. If suffering was always meant to be for our immediate good, then we would be paralysed by continually asking why.

I highly recommend this book for both its style and content. The chapter layout allows the reader to explore a concept then reflect on it. The book does not promise answers that it cannot deliver, but it is certainly a useful starting point for exploring the issues around suffering.
