Goodbyes and Hello

A very fond farewell to Lizzie Groom and Noel Aruparayil, who have done sterling work as our office interns for the last year.

Lizzie, who achieved a First in her intercalated medical law and ethics degree and was top of the class, heads back to Cardiff medical school for her final two years. Noel, currently doing a locum in Bradford, is hoping to find an F1 post for August.

We also say goodbye to Adrian Cheung, our staffworker in Dublin. He's returning to Australia, having been a tremendous encouragement to our students in Ireland. He'll be sorely missed!

We're looking forward to Kerry Lim starting as our new 'field intern' in Southampton in September. She'll be part of our south-east team while she also studies a theology course in London. More in the next edition.

Medical school teams

Do consider whether you might be able to help support students, as part of a local team of doctors co-ordinated by the medical school secretaries. You may have a home that students could meet in, or where you could host a yearly barbecue; you may be able to speak at their meetings; you might meet with individual students to encourage them, to study the Bible together, or to pray with them.

The centre spread article in the accompanying Triple Helix should encourage you and give you more ideas. Do get in touch with the medical school secretary (contact details are on the website) or via the office.

Freshers

Please remember freshers in your prayers. Hundreds of Christian students will soon be arriving at medical school for the first time, facing all sorts of new pressures. Please pray for local churches, CUs and CMF groups as they support them and pray for a witness to the many thousands of students who are not yet Christians.

Summer School

June 21-25 saw the first CMF Student Summer School in many years. 16 students gathered in stunning surroundings at Knock in Cumbria, for a week of in-depth study and discussion… and fun! We studied the book of Titus together over three mornings, and considered in depth topics including medical ethics, giving an evangelistic talk, and writing for newspapers and journals. We enjoyed a couple of film nights, and the England-Slovenia World Cup game. We also played lots of volleyball, four-square, Frisbee, and pool...and if you don't know what four-square is, come next year! We hope to make this a regular event in the student calendar; it's a brilliant opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to grips with stuff.

    Participants' comments included
  • extremely helpful – I have a much better appreciation of ethics now
  • the film discussions were excellent – intellectual and theological, but also fairly chilled out
  • it was a really great week; useful, encouraging and challenging
  • great to focus on the Bible together
  • really good group size that made it safe to discuss ideas and give talks
