ss nucleus - autumn 1995, Editorial

Editorial

This editorial was written in the middle of medical finals. After six years, it seems amazing that it will all be over so soon. Yes your aged editor will soon be wheeled out to grass, perhaps to write one of those stimulating 'life after medicine' articles. If you don't know what I mean, get a copy of the qualified CMF Journal one of the privileges of being on the nucleus committee is getting your own copy.

No longer will I be reading Nucleus before it gets put together. Maybe you've also seen the last of my articles. Still, with the first year of House-jobs I'm sure I'll be busy enough. Of course, if I fail, maybe I'll stay on for just one more issue!

Life is like a cycle. It seems such a short time ago that I was starting at medical school. Now it's all nearly all over. It's easy to look forward, or indeed to look back, but what we need to do is be faithful to God in the situation we are in. At times, particularly in the stress of finals, God may seem distant. When that is the case, looking back in a positive way can actually be beneficial. We need to remind ourselves of all that God has done for us, both in saving us and also in all the myriads of practical ways. All those disasters that he has helped me through in the past help me to know that whether I pass and start on the wards, or fail and have to resit, he will still be with me.

For many of us the summer is a bit of a breather, and a chance to re-evaluate. Let's make sure we remember God's faithfulness and resolve to trust him whatever our circumstances may be.

This has been a deliberately personal editorial, but I must end with an appeal. I am rather conscious of the fact that this issue is being put together by overworked office staff with rather less help than normal due to the ever diminishing band of intrepid nucleus team members, and the interference of exams. We are very grateful to the office staff, but surely, somewhere there are some more people who, would like to join the nucleus team and, among other things, read those 'life after medicine' articles.

To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness...There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven. (Ec 2:26, 3:1)

PS Yes, this isn't the new-look nucleus yet. We are now hoping it might come NEXT issue. Perhaps the time for it just hasn't come yet (maybe I should have quoted James 4:13-15!)
